This could be the last red wolf you see. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service seeks to reduce the recovery area for the world’s only wild red wolves by 90% and limit the population to just 10-15. Moreover, the killing of any red wolf who leaves the newly-designated “recovery” area will be ‘explicitly permissible’. Does this sound like recovery? This video clip by Ranger Emily Lozen at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham shows how strong and coordinated these very young pups are. The red wolf habitat is steep in places and wooded as you can see. There is a little pond at the base for drinking and cooling off. The father wolf is attentive and watchful. The pups at this age attempt to follow their parents everywhere, and Dad encourages this. Notice that he returns immediately if a pup lags behind. Em says she could watch him all day
