Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) argued that political order ultimately rests on power. Laws, rules, and rational debate function best when the balance of force between people is roughly equal; when power is uneven, principles often become tools of the stronger. For Schmitt, discussions about law, rules, or reason are shaped by the conditions under which they occur. When both sides hold the same power, negotiation becomes possible. When power disappears on one side, the conversation often stops being eq
