Aviation officials first found out about the Chinese live fire exercises through a Virgin pilot, with the activity causing the diversion of almost 50 flights.

Australian authorities learned Chinese warships were performing live fire drills off the country's east coast from the pilot of a Virgin Australia flight.

Airservices Australia has revealed that a Virgin Airlines pilot was the first to spot three Chinese warships off Australia's east coast last week.
