First a bridge and now a Navy destroyer has been named after former Nebraska governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, the Nebraska Examiner reports.

Robert Kerrey led Navy SEAL teams in Vietnam and was later elected governor of Nebraska and then to the U.S. senate for a dozen years.

Years before becoming Nebraska governor and then senator, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1970 for gallantry under fire in Vietnam.

The U.S. Navy has named its two newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers as the future USS Intrepid and USS Robert Kerrey. DDG-145 is the fifth ship to be called Intrepid while DDG-146 was named after Joseph Robert Kerrey,
