SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The Department of Defense is expanding a militarized zone along the southern U.S. border where troops are authorized to detain people who enter for possible federal prosecution on charges of trespassing in a national defense area.

This marks the third National Defense Area to be established on the southern border of the U.S., and joins over 200 miles monitored by a federal taskforce created in March.

The Defense Department is establishing two additional military zones along the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to further crack down on unlawful migrant crossings, a Defense official confirmed to The Hill.
