Georgia House members have voted overwhelmingly for a school safety bill aimed at preventing a school shooting like the one in September that killed two teachers and two students at a high school northeast of Atlanta.

Six months after the tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, the Georgia House of Representatives passed two bills aimed at improving safety for students.

Right now, Apalachee High School teachers are allowed 90 minutes a week to leave campus for counseling, according to Barrow County School System. District staff told the board during the meeting that they have hired one clinician trained in trauma counseling. That is one of two people who will be dedicated to serving students on campus.

The Georgia State House passed two bills Tuesday in the wake of last fall’s mass shooting at Apalachee High School. One would enact a tax credit for safe guns storage devices. Another would create training and databases for schools to manage threats.
